The STAR Market, as is implied by the name, is heavily geared toward smaller innovative tech companies, in particular those engaged in strategically important fields, such as biopharmaceuticals, 5G technology, semiconductors, and new energy. The STAR Market currently has 340 listed securities. The STAR Market is seen as important for Chinaā€™s high-tech and emerging industries, providing a space for smaller companies to raise capital in China. This is especially significant for technology companies that may be viewed with suspicion on overseas stock exchanges.

Should You Buy Bitcoin?

In general, many financial experts support their clientsā€™ desire to buy cryptocurrency, but they donā€™t recommend it unless clients express interest. ā€œThe biggest concern for us is if someone wants to invest in crypto and the investment they choose doesnā€™t do well, and then all of a sudden they canā€™t send their kids to college,ā€ says Ian Harvey, a certified financial planner (CFP) in New York City. ā€œThen it wasnā€™t worth the risk.ā€ The speculative nature of cryptocurrency leads some planners to recommend it for clientsā€™ ā€œsideā€ investments. ā€œSome call it a Vegas account,ā€ says Scott Hammel, a CFP in Dallas. ā€œLetā€™s keep this away from our real long-term perspective, make sure it doesnā€™t become too large a portion of your portfolio.ā€ In a very real sense, Bitcoin is like a single stock, and advisors wouldnā€™t recommend putting a sizable part of your portfolio into any one company. At most, planners suggest putting no more than 1% to 10% into Bitcoin if youā€™re passionate about it. ā€œIf it was one stock, you would never allocate any significant portion of your portfolio to it,ā€ Hammel says.
